Distance Selling rules in force from 31st October

OUT-LAW News, 30/10/2000

From 31st October 2000, the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 will be in force, placing new obligations on on-line retailers and other businesses in the UK that sell to consumers.

The Regulations, which have been delayed in their introduction, give new protection to consumers who shop by phone, mail order, via the internet, or digital TV, including:

  • The right to receive clear information about goods and services before deciding to buy;
  • Confirmation of this information in writing;
  • A cooling off period of seven working days in which the consumer can withdraw from the contract; and
  • Protection from credit card fraud.
