A leading data communications technology company in the US, Multi-Tech Systems Inc settled its patent infringement case with MediaRing.com Inc, an internet telephone service company. The lawsuit concerned patents held by Multi-Tech over Digital Simultaneous Voice and Data (DSVD) technology, technology for preparing voice, data or video information for transmission over communications lines including telephone lines.

The settlement includes non-exclusive access for MediaRing to Multi-Tech’s DSVD patents and dismissal of all claims.

Multi-Tech had claimed that MediaRing was using its technology in violation of the patent and has raised similar claims against several other companies in the same line of business as MediaRing including Net2Phone, Vocaltec Communications, Really Easy Internet and Dialpad.com. Multi-Tech has also asserted its DSVD patents against PC manufacturers Compaq, Dell Gateway as well as Microsoft.

Multi-Tech owns over 50 US patents and, as explained by Multi-Tech’s legal representation, its “patent infringement suits are designed to capitalise on the company’s substantial investment in research and development and its patent portfolio.” Multi-Tech, he said “intends to vigorously pursue companies that are using Multi-Tech’s pioneering technology.”
