Nominet UK, the registry for all domain names ending .uk, today
introduced a new second level domain, .me.uk. It is the first new
second level domain to be introduced by Nominet since it began
operating the .uk registry in 1996.
The .me.uk domain is intended for personal use and registrations
are now being taken on a first-come, first-served basis. However,
registration is not limited to individuals' names. The introduction
will use a pricing scale which could help to deter cybersquatters
and to control any rush to register the new names.
Nominet members who re-sell the names have been given pricing
information. They can then charge whatever the market will bear.
From today, Nominet will charge £50 plus VAT per name. This charge
will reduce each month until 1st July 2002 when its price will be
£5 per name, the current charge for .co.uk names.
The introduction of the new names follows a vote of 74.4% in
favour by the membership of Nominet UK.
