$800,000 paid for Jobs.com domain name

OUT-LAW News, 22/04/2002

TMP Worldwide, owner of recruitment site Monster.com, has bought the domain name Jobs.com and associated trade mark rights for the sum of $800,000 at a court-approved bankruptcy auction.

Monster.com plans to use the name to increase internet traffic to its main site as well as set up a new platform for jobs paid by the hour. Jobs.com received a monthly average of more than 400,000 unique visitors during the first two months of 2002, according to Media Metrix, despite being out of business at the time.

TMP Worldwide is the biggest on-line recruitment company, with more than 11,000 employees in 32 countries.

According to the E-commerce Times, Jobs.com filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2001 after burning around $100 million in venture funding.

The $800,000 price is the highest disclosed sum paid for a domain name in several months. According to Domainmart.com, the most valuable name on the internet is sex.com which, despite being the subject of legal battles, has never been sold. The second most valuable name is said to be business.com, which was sold for $7.5 million in November 1999. Around the same time, wines.com and loans.com each fetched £3 million.
