Government to lift 20 partner limit on partnerships

OUT-LAW News, 08/05/2002

The UK Parliament is today considering a draft piece of legislation that would remove the 20 partner limit on partnerships and limited partnerships, a limitation which is seen as unnecessary.

The current prohibition dates back to 1856, but there are exemptions. These currently apply to solicitors, accountants, chartered surveyors and doctors. Typically, a majority of the partners must be members of the specified profession before it is eligible for exemption.

If approved, the draft Regulatory Reform Order (and supporting Explanatory Document) will remove the 20 partner limit from all business types.
