Chairman of OFCOM appointed

OUT-LAW News, 25/07/2002

Lord David Currie of Marylebone has been appointed as the first Chairman of the new Office of Communications (OFCOM). The appointment, for a period of 5 years, will involve overseeing the creation of OFCOM which will regulate broadcasting, telecommunications and the management of the radio spectrum.

OFCOM will combine the responsibilities of the existing regulators in these sectors, the Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC), the Independent Television Commission (ITC), Office of Telecommunications (Oftel), the Radio Authority and the Radiocommunications Agency.

Once OFCOM is up and running, the Chairman and Board will be responsible for administrating the new regulatory regime set out in the draft Communications Bill, published in May.

Lord Currie, aged 55, will receive a salary of £133,000 for his four days per week position. He is currently Dean of City University Business School and Professor of Business Economics.

Other current positions include Chairman of Coredeal/MTS; Non-Executive Director of Abbey National plc; Director of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust (Investments) Ltd; and a Member of Terra Consilia.
