EU group to regulate radio spectrum

OUT-LAW News, 30/07/2002

The European Commission yesterday set up an advisory group to co-ordinate regulation on the radio spectrum, which is used for the transmission of mobile and fixed wireless communications. The Radio Spectrum Policy Group will assist the Commission in policy and harmonisation issues.

The Group will comprise high level representatives from Member States and the Commission, as well as observers from the European Parliament, European Economic Area and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute.

The first meting of the Group will be held in the second half of 2002. The Group’s work will be complemented by that of the Radio Spectrum Committee, which will focus on technical implementing measures for efficient use of radio spectrum.

Another advisory group, the European Regulators Group has also been set up to assist the Commission in the areas of electronic communications networks and services.
