Laptop computer burned lap, says doctor

OUT-LAW News, 25/11/2002

A 50-year old man from Sweden has been given medical treatment for burns and blistering after he used a laptop computer on his lap for an hour, according to the latest issue of British medical weekly The Lancet.

According to Claes Goran Ostensen, a molecular medicine scientist who reported the case, the victim had been working with his laptop on his lap when he noticed a burning sensation. The next day he found that his genital area was covered in burns and blisters.

According to the report, the laptop's instruction manual warned users not to allow the computer to rest directly on exposed skin, since "sustained contact with the skin could cause discomfort or, eventually, a burn." However the patient claims he was fully dressed at the time of the incident.

The report does not name the laptop's manufacturer. The safety instructions quote, however, are reported to be the same as those of Dell's Latitude laptop. Dell told reporters that it has not received any complaints related to the injury.
