UK biotech industry gets new regulatory portal

OUT-LAW News, 13/03/2003

UK Science Minister Lord Sainsbury yesterday launched i-biouk, a portal giving access to accurate information on industry, academic research, investment, and Government policy, as well as a "regulation atlas" for biotech businesses.

The portal was designed to give fast access to a range of up-to-date information. It includes a system to continuously scan and retrieve electronic data from over 200 sources, including Government.

The UK biotech industry is the second largest in the world after the US. The UK accounts for three quarters of European public biotech companies. About 400 biotechnology businesses are generating annual revenues of over £1.8 billion - nearly three times that of the UK's closest European competitor. UK companies employ about 18,700 people and support over 40,000 additional jobs in the economy.

The site is at: www.i-bio.gov.uk
