According to legal journal The Recorder, the patents cover: "ordering and downloading resources from computerised repositories"; a "computer system for management of resources"; and a "mechanism for dependably managing web synchronization and tracking operations among multiple browsers".
Formerly known as National Cash Register and a leading maker of ATMs, NCR wrote to Yahoo! last year, detailing the alleged infringements and requesting that the internet portal begin paying license fees. Yahoo! defended its position aggressively, filing a court action in December which asked the court to declare that there was no infringement and that the patents in question were not valid.
However, Tuesday's settlement involved Yahoo! entering into a patent license agreement with NCR on terms that were not disclosed.
The deal will encourage NCR, which has almost 30,000 staff, to pursue its claims against other companies that it alleges to be infringing its patents. According to The Recorder, it has already sent warnings to at least 15 other companies.
