Legal barriers to e-commerce – EU consultation

OUT-LAW News, 17/09/2003

Does your business have problems when doing international deals on-line? Do disparate national rules for electronic invoicing or electronic signatures give you headaches? These are questions that the European Commission hopes businesses will answer.

Announcing the launch of a new consultation yesterday, Enterprise Commissioner Erkki Liikanen said:

"The EU legal framework for e-business is well and widely established. It's now time to take stock of remaining barriers and decide how to remove them. This discussion should be based on practical examples and experience, not just on theoretical views of what may go wrong."

The consultation is targeting enterprises taking part in e-business and experienced in doing business on-line. The Commission wants their opinions on the existing legal framework for e-business in the European Union and those countries soon joining the EU.

The consultation takes the form of a short questionnaire, which will be available on-line until 7th November. A summary of replies will be issued in January, and the results will be discussed at a conference in March/April next year.
