The Recording Industry Association of America has sent out
warnings to 204 individuals suspected of unlawfully using
peer-to-peer systems to share copyrighted music, giving them 10
days to "resolve" the matter, to avoid being sued.
It represents a softer approach than the RIAA displayed the last
time it targeted individuals in this way, when it sued 261
individuals without warning, a tactic that resulted in fierce
criticism from pressure groups and lawmakers.
According to The Wall Street Journal, it has settled around 20%
of the cases in its first batch for around $2,000 each.
