Grand Theft Auto game incites lawsuit

OUT-LAW News, 05/01/2004

Haitian civil rights organisations have filed a lawsuit over video game 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City', which, they claim, calls on players to "Kill the Haitians" and awards points for doing so. The suit seeks the withdrawal of the game from shops and damages of over $15,000, according to an Associated Press report.

The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most popular developed by Rockstar Games. The Vice City version is set in Miami and features a fictional Haitian mafia – most of whom are killed by the player in the course of the game.

According to Associated Press, a group of Haitian civil liberties organisations filed suit on 23rd December against Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive Software, Microsoft, Sony and several retailers, despite an undertaking by Rockstar Games to remove the offending phrase from all future releases.
