RIAA threatens P2P firms after Grokster ruling

OUT-LAW News, 16/09/2005

The Recording Industry Association of America has sent cease-and-desist letters to seven P2P companies to stop enabling and inducing the infringement of its members' music, according to a report by CNET News.com.

The letters follow a recent Supreme Court win for the music industry, where Grokster and StreamCast Networks were found liable for copyright infringements by users of their peer-to-peer software, because they had intended the software to be used for that purpose.

The recipients of the seven letters have not been identified by the RIAA, although The Wall Street Journal reports that BearShare, WinMX and LimeWire have received letters.
