Techie jargon baffles workers, says survey

OUT-LAW News, 26/09/2005

Common technical terms such as “bandwidth” and “IP address” baffle office workers to such an extent that 67% of them feel inadequate and bewildered when listening to IT professionals, according to a survey by Computer People.

Advert: Phishing conference, London, 27th October 2005Three quarters of those surveyed waste over an hour a week trying to work out what terms such as “cookies” and “firewall” mean – and younger recruits are just as baffled as older staff members, says the survey.

Of the 1,000 office workers polled by the IT recruitment agency, 56% thought that IT professionals spoke another language, while 40% reckoned that IT staff do not know how much confusion their use of tech jargon causes.

"Our research shows there's a real need for IT professionals to use 'techno-speak' sparingly when talking to people outside their vocation,” said Carole Hepburn, Commercial Director at Computer People.
