Chinese web site suspended for spreading rumours

OUT-LAW News, 16/05/2000

Chinese authorities have suspended a web site, China Finance Information Network, based in the city of Wuhan, for spreading rumours that allegedly damaged the government’s image.

The site has been suspended from service and fined 15,000 yuan (US$1,800), according to the official Wenhui Daily newspaper, although no further details were given.

An announcement was posted on the home page of the web site which quoted police as saying that the 15 day suspension was due to a Hong Kong newspaper article about corruption by a provincial official that had posted by the China Finance Information Network in March. The announcement said, “An investigation by government authorities showed the news article was untrue and the web site had trespassed on the underlying person’s reputation and affected foreign investment.”
