A new top level domain, “.TV” became available yesterday from a
company which has purchased the rights to a small nation’s domain
name.
dotTV, the business handling the domain, reports considerable
interest in the domain name. The registration of .TV domain names
is taking place at www.tv. Some of the names are available at fixed
prices; others are being auctioned.
Through an agreement entered into with the government of Tuvalu,
a small Pacific island nation, dotTV became the exclusive registry
and registrar for the .TV domain.
Tuvalu plans to use the proceeds from the agreement, a minimum
of US$4 million per year over the next ten years, to increase the
quality of life for the 10,000 citizens on the island. Tuvalu is
also a significant minority shareholder in dotTV and sits on the
dotTV board of directors.
Already, the entertainment company MGM has acquired eight of the
new domain names, including MGM.TV, JamesBond.TV and
PinkPanther.TV.
