AOL and Yahoo! are on the verge of introducing a voluntary
system that would see senders of bulk email paying between
$0.0025 and $0.01 per message to ensure that their emails go direct
to subscribers without the risk of being caught by spam filters,
according to reports.
Senders using these systems would also have to agree to only
send messages to subscribers who had opted-in to receiving those
emails, writes The New York Times.
Both firms have confirmed that they would treat emails from
companies that had not signed up to the new system in exactly the
same way as they do now.
According to The New York Times, AOL is due to start accepting
‘charged’ email within the next two months. Californian email
certification firm Goodmail Systems will handle the payment and
verification aspects of the system. Yahoo! is also expected to
start trials of the system in the next few months.
