Ericsson sues Samsung for patent infringement

OUT-LAW News, 27/02/2006

Telecoms supplier Ericsson has filed four patent infringement suits against mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics, according to reports. Courts in the US, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands will hear the actions.

Ericsson spokeswoman Ase Lindskog told Reuters that the two firms had been negotiating to renew licenses that expired at the turn of the year, but that the talks had been unsuccessful.

"They are using mobile phone patents which no longer have licences," said Lindskog.

The patents in question reportedly relate to key mobile technology standards including the Global System for Mobile communications, General Packet Radio Service and Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution.

Samsung has made no comment so far.
