The team

The Insurance & Reinsurance Group is headed by Tim Burton and comprises 24 lawyers including 7 partners. 

The Group is a successful and expanding one, with a strong team ethos. It includes the UK's top 5 general insurers amongst its clients. And with insurance as one of the Firm's key areas, it has a significant profile within the Firm. 

As part of the Group's expansion it is now looking to recruit a lawyer who has from 2 years post qualification experience to work on a part-time basis in a job share role.

The candidate required

The ideal candidate will have a mixed background of contentious and non-contentious insurance/reinsurance work in the following areas. Impressive candidates with experience in some but not all of these areas will also be considered. They will have strong academics and be used to dealing with complex insurance issues. In addition they will have excellent communication and organisational skills coupled with a good sense of humour and able to contribute to the collegiate environment.

  • Advising insurers, professionals and other corporate policyholders on insurance coverage issues
  • Acting for insurers and professionals in relation to professional indemnity claims
  • Drafting and advising on reinsurance agreements, policy wordings and other product documentation for general insurance products
  • Advising on the application of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, the secondary legislation made thereunder and the rules of the Financial Services Authority to the business of insurers and intermediaries involved in the offer and sale of general insurance
  • Drafting and negotiating distribution agreements for the sale of general insurance products for insurer and intermediary clients

  • Advising an international engineering contractor on coverage issues in a US$50m claim against US insurers arising out of the construction of a European power plant
  • Acting for a top 5 UK insurer restructuring capital allocation for a £100m GWP pa corporate partnership deal through reinsurance and retrocession arrangements
  • Acting for Aviva group companies on a series of inter-connected corporate and commercial contracts resulting in Norwich Union Insurance, the UK's largest general insurer, becoming the primary provider of household, motor and travel insurance products to Barclays plc's 14 million UK retail customer base
  • Acting for a leading UK general insurer on the appointment of a nationwide high street chain as its appointed representative and on the distribution of affinity insurance products through its sales network of high street stores, branded websites and call centres
  • Defending a leading broker in relation to an E&O claim arising from the placement of reinsurance policies on behalf of various central American insurers impacted by Hurricanes Emily and Wilma
  • Bringing successful arbitration proceedings on behalf of a broker against its professional liability insurers following a wrongful repudiation of cover concerning the scope of a notification of circumstances
  • Defending London market brokers in relation to a series of disputes concerning the placement and operation of binding authorities in the French and Spanish markets
  • Acting for a group of shareholders in relation to a £2.5m claim against leading accountants
