28th January 2008 is Data Protection Day, an event organised by the Council of Europe and the European Commission to raise awareness of the importance of data protection.

Data Protection Law and PracticeTo mark the day, we're giving away three copies of the third edition of Data Protection Law & Practice by Rosemary Jay, National Head of Pinsent Masons' Information Law team and former Head of Legal at the Office of the Data Protection Registrar (now known as the Information Commissioner). The first Data Protection Day took place on 28th January 2007. The date marks the signing in 1981 of the Council of Europe's Convention on the Protection of Individuals with regart to the automatic processing of Personal Data. The Council of Europe explains what other countries are up to on the day.
